                Gentlemen:
                    As your comrade of these many years I felt it my duty to place
                before you evidence of a stand I have often public taken when we
                are together.  Knowing me as you do - you must realize that I am no
                "prude" and would never deny any man his freedom to act as he might
                wish within the established "rules" of the 9th Texas.
                    And YET, I feel compelled to once again bring this issue to the fore.
                As you know, often when we are gather in the field an impromptu game
                of "mumblety-peg" will break out - featuring knives of various sizes and
                characteristics.  I have often vocally warned those participants of the
                dangers of such a game - but usually to no avail.  While our proud regi-
                ment has so far remained accident free - I must hearken back to the
                unfortunate accident of my ancestor who lost an eye playing just this
                game. 
                    You will fine "enclosed" a copy of a photo of this young man and while
                quality of the reproduction leaves much to be desired - you will notice that
                he is missing his right eye.  Gentlemen - no further evidence need be given.
                I'm sure if he were alive to day he would admonish you (gently but firmly)
                to not give in to the intemperate behavior of your youth.
